University College at the University of Toronto invites applications for a one year, part-time (40%) appointment as the Acting Director of the University College Writing Centre (UCWC). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream and will commence on July 1, 2017, ending on June 30, 2018.
The University College Writing Centre offers one-on-one writing assistance to UC students and to students in UC programs. It also offers skills workshops on various aspects of writing and supports writing development in UC programs. The Acting Director of the Writing Centre will provide academic administration of the centre and also undertake direct writing instruction.

Arts Studies in Research and Writing (Twelve-Month Lecturer)
The University of British Columbia (Vancouver) invites applications for a 12-month lecturer position in Arts Studies in Research and Writing (ASRW) in the Faculty of Arts (http://asrw.arts.ubc.ca). This position may be filled as either a part-time or full-time appointment (75% – 100%) and normally with an anticipated start date of July 1 or September 1, 2016, depending on course scheduling.
Arts Studies in Research and Writing is a unit specializing in the study and teaching of research and writing. ASRW courses introduce Faculty of Arts students to the discursive practices of social science and humanities disciplines. The successful candidate will work closely with other ASRW faculty to support student participation in research activities (e.g., student conferences), and s/he may be asked to contribute to other ASRW initiatives and to the further development of curriculum for undergraduate research writing. The ASRW Lecturer can expect to teach several sections of ASRW courses: WRDS 150 (Research and Writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences) and ASTU 400A (Interdisciplinary Studies in Arts: Knowledge-Making), with the possibility of teaching a course in another unit in the Faculty of Arts.
Applicants will have a doctorate in a relevant field, including writing and discourse studies, composition, rhetoric, applied linguistics, language and literacy studies, or equivalent experience teaching academic writing in university environments in a way that is informed by current theories in writing pedagogy. Evidence of teaching excellence is required. Evidence of successful team building, collaboration, and curriculum development is an asset, as is a keen interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
This position is a one-year appointment without review (non-tenure track), with the possibility of renewal on a yearly basis subject to availability of funds, excellence in performance, and in accordance with UBC policies. A full-time 12-Month Lecturer is expected to carry a teaching load of 24 credits (i.e., eight 3-credit courses) plus service; however, a 3-credit teaching reduction may be granted where additional administrative responsibilities are assigned by the Chair. It is expected that teaching assignments will be distributed across the 12-month period of appointment to include scheduling in the summer session, if possible.

The development of critical thinking and writing skills is a key component of studies in the Health Sciences at the University of Toronto. Now in its 21st year of operation, the Health Sciences Writing Centre (HSWC) provides academic writing and language instruction in the following five domains: (i) individual (1:1) instruction for undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculties of Dentistry, Kinesiology & Physical Education, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Social Work; (ii) critical thinking and writing instruction integrated within Faculty curricula (lectures, workshops, seminars); (iii) English Language Development; (iv) online learning; and (v) collaboration with faculty/TAs on assignment design/evaluation and academic integrity issues.
The Director of the Health Sciences Writing Centre provides intellectual, pedagogical, and administrative leadership in writing instruction in and across the Health Sciences disciplinary curricula. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, letters of reference, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application. The Director must also demonstrate a strong record of active scholarship, publications related to pedagogy or writing instruction, and creative professional activity, as well as the ability to work effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse undergraduate and graduate students.
Duties of the Director include:
- promoting student-centred teaching and learning styles
- leading a team of writing instructors embedded in each of the five Faculties
- collaborating with disciplinary course instructors and deliver lectures on academic forms of writing; may also teach non-credit courses
- providing administrative leadership for the HSWC
- consulting with disciplinary course instructors on issues related to assignment design and evaluation, as well as issues of academic integrity
- contributing to curriculum development of undergraduate and graduate programs
- performing important service activities such as membership on tenure and promotion committees, and membership on KPE Faculty Council and professoriate
- engaging in collaborative leadership within the vibrant and intellectually engaged community of writing centres at the University of Toronto.
